The hotels with more than 100 rooms in Panama City registered an occupancy level of 79% between January and October 2008, according to preliminary information from the Tourism Authority of Panama (ATP).
The index remains at levels that have been experiencing throughout the year, which shows that "at this moment, the international economic crisis is not affecting Panama at all, unlike other countries in this same sector," said Jorge Loaiza, president of the Panamanian Association of Hotels.
The customer of the city is the businessman, who remains attracted by the good behavior of the local economy.
"Yes you will feel a downturn during the holiday season, as it descends business, but not by the crisis," said Loaiza.
The hotels with fewer than 100 rooms, for its part, had an occupancy of 46%, a figure similar to that recorded in previous months.
Both Loaiza as Joseph Thomas, president of the National Association of Small Hotels of Panama, demanded that it be included in the statistics to hotels in the interior. “
"All hotels have to pay their taxes and to inform the ATP about his occupation," he said.
