Panama retirement havenAmerica the land of opportunity-  And so it is for many, but something is changing there is a phenomenon in America today, a large wave of native born American citizens are going abroad in search of new opportunities, better quality of life,  more affordable cost of living,  cheaper health care, and more congenial ways of life.   In his recent book “Bad Money“, political commentator Kevin Phillips speaks of an unprecedented number of American citizens, fed up with failed politics and a souring economy have already departed for other countries, with even larger numbers planning to do so soon.  Europe draws many American immigrants, but more have relocated to Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and now - Panama.

John Wennerstein, author of “Leaving America; The New Expatriate Generation” and retired historian says  “Panama is the new “New thing”  for part of what he calls “a long-term trend” in the making.   Emigration figures have never been easy to come by in the United States, Elizabeth Grieco, chief of immigration statistics at the U.S. Census Bureau,  states “We don’t count U.S. citizens living abroad”.  But if government is not counting, others are.  Estimates made by the Association of Americans Resident Overseas put the number at up to 7 million Americans living overseas.  A recent Zogby polls commissioned by New Global Initiatives, a private consulting firm, reported a surprising 1.6 million American households have already determined to relocate abroad, and 1.8 million households are seriously considering such a move, while almost 8 million are “somewhat seriously” contemplating it or open to the idea.
Based on this data there are an estimated 3 million American U.S. citizens per year venturing abroad.  More surprisingly is that this trend is not only composed of retiring Baby Boomers, it is composed also of adults ranging from 25 to 34 years old.  Ask any of the hundreds of thousands of American military and department of defense civilians that were at some point stationed in Panama,  or the thousands of Americans that were born in the canal zone,  known as “Zonians”- all have something in common,  they have pleasant memories of Panama and they carry a Love Affair with Panama.
