As the U.S. is facing a recession and many people are losing their homes because they can no longer afford the high payments, the high costs of Insurance, property taxes, and the rising cots of living, Many people are turning to riding out their retirement years in Mexico, Costa Rica, and Panama, where the quality of life is much better than in the U.S., and the cost of living is cheaper. The U.S. recession will probably reach all of us at some point, however I would much rather ride out a recession in Panama where beer is $0. 59 cents than anywhere else.

We went shopping and we compiled a list of what you can buy for $1.00 in Panama:
  1. Buy a liter of Coca Cola Light for $0.82 cents.
  2. Buy a bottle of Miller Genuine Draft $0.59 cents.
  3. Buy a Corona for $0.99 and a Heineken is a cool $0.69 cents.
  4. Buy a Cheeseburger at McDonalds for just $0.85 cents.
  5. Buy a combo of Coffee & a Donut at Dunkin’ Donuts for just $0.99 cents.
  6. Try Wendy´s Hamburgers they offer a variety of products for $0.99 cents.
  7. Go to one of the many World Class Casinos in Panama, Slots start at $0.01 cent, here´s the kicker: all drinks are free while you gamble! Yes, Free!
  8. Rent a video from Block Buster or Video Ave., for just $0.99 cents.
  9. Surf the web, Internet Café´s charge $0.50 cents per hour.
  10. Buy a phone card for national and international calling they start as little as a $1.00.
  11. Get your Dry cleaning done, each piece of clothing will cost you about $0.80 cents.
  12. Get a shoe shine for $0.50 cents.
  13. Or, Pay some one to watch over your car while you shop or work at the end this human anti-theft system will be happy with $0.50 cents.
  14. Get a car wash for $1.00.
  15. You can get a public bus for $0.25 cents across town. We dare you!
  16. A taxi, these are finest drivers you can buy for $1.00 for a dozen blocks ride.
  17. Roses for that special someone while you wait at a traffic stop, this will get you some nice brownie points for only $1.00.
  18. Get your windshield washed at a stop sign for $0.50 cents.
  19. The daily newspaper “La Prensa” is $0.35 cents.
  20. Fruits at the local fruit stop for less than a $1.00 a pound: bananas, mangos, papaya’s etc.
To top it all off, as a “Pensionado” pensioner or “Jubilado” retiree : you get special discounts. Panama has the best Retiree program in the World. Here are some of the benefits:

  • 30% off bus, boat, and train fares
