Have you bought your Panama property, settled in, and found out you
re not ready to retire yet. What can you do to stay busy in Panama? Many things. We are not referring to run-of-the-mill entertainment, but are speaking instead of
occupations you might find worthy of your time or interest. Here are some ideas that might serve your need to return to the working world.
Writing and Journalism
If you like to write, you might find a freelance gig or two for publications, news services or online projects that require copy, editing, etc. There is some room for academic writing, though I suspect this is often for students writing their thesis and would rather fob the job off to someone else! Keep your eyes and ears open and you might stumble into an enjoyable pastime. You might even find yourself writing that novel you have had lurking inside you. Several people have done just that recently and are introducing Panama to the rest of the masses.
Photography
In the age of digital cameras, there is no excuse not to take copious amounts of gorgeous photos of Panama. Perhaps you will find opportunity to have a showing. Create your own online gallery. If you love this artistic medium, you are sure to find no end of wondrous shots. You might even be able to sell your Panama photos. Marketing them is up to you, however.
Art Work
Did you ever wish you had the time to take up sketching or even painting? In Panama you will find a large selection of art supplies, at lower prices than you would expect. Once you have your materials, you have only to find something you want to paint or draw. If web or graphic design is your forte, Panama offers you a booming market with not enough qualified talent to fill it yet.
Computer Programmers
Speaking of computers, Panama is establishing itself as a high-tech outsource destination through projects like the City of Knowledge and Panama Techno Park. If you know how to manage a high level IT department or can program in PHP or other Web 2.0-friendly formats, Panama is the place for you. Competition to get top talent is fierce, and salaries range from $1500-$4000 a month.
Mechanics & Handymen
Unfortunately in Panama, the quality of repairs tends to fall under the bubble gum or duct tape varieties. If you like to fix cars or motorcycles or are good at basic electrical, cement or woodworking, the Expat community will pay you top dollar to get the quality they are used to. Effective general site construction management is also in short supply.
Consultants
There is many an experienced engineer or even accountant that has found a niche for consultant work in Panama. Whatever your expertise, it is quite possible there is someone willing to pay you to share it. And, since most such arrangements are freelance, you can pick and choose your assignments. Some areas you might consider are golf pro or superintendent, management/marketing consultants, financial planning, real estate development, engineer, medical, sales and customer service training, etc. Whatever your field, you will probably find someone looking for an outsider s expertise.
Teachers & Instructors
There is an ever-present need for teachers in Panama, for virtually all subjects, and as long as you have a Degree or experience in an area, you don t always need teaching experience. This includes institutions from elementary school to university.
Language teaching is a popular choice. A native speaker of any language can find people who wish to learn. Private tutoring is usually the most lucrative form of this employment, but can also be erratic due to client`s schedules, the weather, and holidays. Teaching at an institution is different in that it is more stable, but you are charged taxes, and before even that you require a work visa, which can be hard to come by. It really depends on the institution. Bottom line, there is always work.
Some possible areas to explore for branching into or continuing on are: golf or tennis pro, diving instructors, cooking classes, music guitar, piano, etc. lessons, translators, interpreters. The possibilities are nearly endless.
A Small Business
There is nothing stopping you starting a small business in Panama. If you have a great idea, it is incredibly easy and inexpensive to incorporate and get started. Finding funding is another thing, but if you have no problems in that regard, you have but to plan and execute. There are many great resources out there to help guide you [including here at
ThinkPanama.com, thank you very much] in this area. Starting a business in Panama is not all roses, there are clear guidelines, labor laws, and procedures you must follow. But, compared to most countries, it is a breeze here. Plus, your overheads will be astoundingly low.
Guides
Panama is a popular tourism and travel destination. Visitors that dont speak Spanish are always looking for someone to show them around with English commentary. If you have a car, you multiply your opportunities exponentially.
Volunteers
Last but not least, the wonderful world of volunteering. There are many worthy charities in Panama that would greatly value your time and efforts. KIWANIS. Habitat for Humanity. Lion s Club. Several church organizations of varying denomination. There are loads of options! Even medical teams could use your help, if you happen to be an MD, Dentist or Nurse. Once again, whatever your expertise, or even just with your generous heart, giving of yourself can be a very satisfying occupation. Panama will welcome you with open arms.
